NeuroQuant is an FDA-cleared medical imaging software that uses advanced algorithms to automatically analyze brain MRI data and produce objective, quantitative measurements of key brain structures. It represents a significant advancement in neuroimaging, moving from visual interpretation alone to precise volumetric analysis.
The Role of Brain Volume in Neurological Diagnosis
Many neurological conditions — including Alzheimer disease, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury — are associated with changes in the volume and structure of specific brain regions. For example, atrophy (shrinkage) of the hippocampus is an early indicator of Alzheimer disease and can be detected before overt clinical symptoms appear.
Traditionally, radiologists estimated these changes visually — a process that is subjective and highly variable. NeuroQuant replaces this subjective assessment with accurate, reproducible measurements.
The NeuroQuant Process
- Standard brain MRI acquisition: A standard high-resolution brain MRI is performed at Michigan Diagnostics Center using our advanced imaging equipment.
- Automated segmentation: NeuroQuant software analyzes the MRI images and automatically identifies and segments over 40 distinct brain structures, including the hippocampus, amygdala, ventricles, cortex, and others.
- Volumetric measurement: The volume of each structure is precisely calculated in cubic centimeters.
- Normative comparison: Each measurement is compared to a large normative database of healthy individuals matched for the patient's age, gender, and head size. Deviations from expected values are highlighted.
- Structured report: A detailed color-coded report is generated showing which brain structures fall within normal limits and which show potential abnormalities.
What NeuroQuant Can Detect
- Hippocampal atrophy associated with Alzheimer disease and mild cognitive impairment
- Mesial temporal sclerosis in epilepsy patients
- Diffuse or focal atrophy following traumatic brain injury
- Ventricular enlargement in hydrocephalus or neurodegeneration
- Cortical atrophy patterns associated with various neurodegenerative diseases
