What Is an Arthrogram?

An arthrogram is a specialized diagnostic imaging procedure that combines the injection of contrast material directly into a joint with subsequent MRI imaging. By introducing contrast into the joint space, an arthrogram provides superior visualization of the joint structure compared to a standard MRI.

How Is It Performed?

Under fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance, a physician injects contrast material into the joint. The patient then proceeds to MRI imaging, where the contrast illuminates the joint capsule, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. The procedure is typically completed within one to two hours.

What Joints Can Be Imaged?

• Shoulder — rotator cuff tears, labral tears
• Hip — labral tears, cartilage damage
• Knee — meniscal tears, ligament injuries
• Wrist and elbow — ligament and cartilage pathology
• Ankle — ligamentous instability

Is an Arthrogram Painful?

The injection of contrast may cause brief discomfort or pressure, similar to other joint injections. The joint may feel slightly tender after the procedure. Most patients tolerate the procedure well and resume normal activities shortly afterward.
